The best interfaces are the ones you stop noticing. Here’s what I think that actually means.
Not invisible - present, but calm. There’s a difference between an interface that hides and one that simply doesn’t shout. The first is annoying (where did everything go?). The second is a pleasure.
Calm comes from consistency. From not over-explaining. From trusting the user to figure things out once you’ve set the pattern right. From not celebrating every micro-interaction with an animation that says look at me.
I’m drawn to tools that feel like good tools. A good pen doesn’t announce itself.
